A new harvest on community land

Thobo Farm farms 597 hectares of the Barolong Boo Rapulana community's land at Dudfield, in the Lichtenburg grain belt of North West Province.

We grow white maize, sunflower and soya, and run cattle, sheep and goats on the same ground, so that each enterprise feeds the next.

Our aim is a commercially run, professionally governed farm that turns long-term community land into dependable income for the landowners, for our shareholders and for the people we employ.

Land held in trust

Portion 21 of the farm Dudfield 35 IP lies in Ditsobotla Local Municipality, west of Lichtenburg, in the heart of South Africa's summer-rainfall grain region.

The land belongs to the Barolong Boo Rapulana Communal Property Association. Thobo farms it under a six-year lease that runs from 2026 to 2032.

The Thobo roundel

The closed ring in our mark is a promise: custody, not ownership. We farm this land as its stewards.

  • The land is never put at risk

We never pledge or cede the community's land. It stays outside every funding arrangement we enter into.

  • Farming within the veld's limits

Stock numbers are kept within what the veld can carry. The land must leave our hands in better shape.

  • Partnership by consent

We work with the CPA committee on every matter that touches the land. The community is kept informed, never surprised.

Two enterprises, one farm

The farm divides roughly in half between arable lands and natural grazing. Running both on one unit spreads risk across seasons and markets, and lets every by-product earn its keep.

Arable

about 298 ha
White maize
The regional staple and our anchor crop, with strong local milling and silo demand.
Sunflower
Lower input cost and more drought-tolerant: the margin buffer in a dry season.
Soya beans
Fixes nitrogen and breaks disease cycles, lifting the maize crop that follows.

Livestock

about 298 ha
Cattle
A weaner-production herd on veld, carried through winter on crop residues.
Sheep
Quicker turnover and a steady cash cycle between grain harvests.
Goats
Browse the bush that cattle leave, and sell readily into local demand.

How the two work together

Each enterprise hands something on to the next, season after season.

Harvest leaves stover

Maize and sunflower residue becomes low-cost winter feed.

Animals return fertility

Grazing herds put manure back onto the lands.

Soya feeds the soil

Fixed nitrogen cuts fertiliser cost for the next maize.

Small stock steady cash

Sales through the year cover costs between harvests.

On the farm

Building the herd

We start with a foundation herd of 25 breeding cows and a bull, and grow mainly by keeping back our best heifers rather than buying in. Sheep and goats are built up alongside the cattle for faster turnover.

  • Every animal tagged and recorded
  • Movements under state veterinary controls
  • Stocking matched to the veld's carrying capacity

The herd plan is indicative and set against the farm's grazing capacity.

Markets and partners

Our grain and livestock go into established regional markets, and the farm is backed by partners who share our long-term view.

Grain

Maize, sunflower and soya delivered into the established silo and grain-handling network around Lichtenburg.

Livestock

Weaners and small stock sold through regional auctions and directly to feedlots and abattoirs.

Resilience

Two enterprises and three crops spread weather and price risk across the year.
